Just Flip The Switch

.

“There are some things you don’t have to know how it

works - only that it works. While some people are studying

the roots others are picking the fruits. It just depend on

which end of this you want to get in on.”

- JIM ROHN

Why?

How often do you ask yourself that question? In many ways it’s one of the most fundamental questions we are all preoccupied with. As human beings we have the ability to assign (or make up) meaning to experiences and things. It is this sense of meaning that creates our emotions and consequently what we do or fail to do with our lives. Whenever anything happens to you in your life, your mind always and immediately asks two questions?

The first one is ‘what does this mean?’ and the second is ‘what should I do about it?’. You are constantly attaching meaning to all of your life experiences and these meanings are shaping the quality of your life. Your beliefs are nothing but a shortcut to assigning meaning to something. A belief is nothing but a sense of certainty about what something means. The challenge however is that most of our beliefs were not formed and installed consciously but passed down to us through our peers and our life experiences. Most often they were formed by mismatching experiences and meanings. {all meaning is created, by us through the faculty of thought}

Whereas our beliefs are based on references of what we already ‘know’, faith is purely based on an inner ‘knowing’ or what we call trust. When you have faith you believe in something you cannot yet see. Because most people are so bogged down with the ‘how to’ and the ‘why’s’ of life they never get down to the real purpose behind uncovering meaning which is to experience. You can study the roots all your life and still not experience the joy of actually eating the fruit.

You do not need to know how everything works or why everything happens before you can reap the rewards. I don’t know everything about electricity, yet I can flip the light switch and enjoy the light. If you constantly try and figure out why people do the things they do, or why you always have the bad luck or why you can never get x, y or z, then you will only disempower yourself. Instead of asking yourself ‘why?’, why not ask yourself ‘how can I use it?’ Well adjusted and highly effective people never try and control events. What they do instead is to use what they are given; to utilize things as they are. They spend their time and their energy on how they can best use things the way they are instead of pondering why things are the way they are.

There are many things in life that nobody can explain fully, yet we can all enjoy and experience it. Most people think they have to know everything about everything before they can attempt to do it. At best you will not even master one thing fully in your life. There will also be many things in your life that you won’t be able to consciously explain, but instead of pondering the meaning, why not spend your time and energy on using it for what it is. Conversely you don’t have to keep re-inventing the wheel to use it. We live in the information age and you can find the ‘how to’ on almost anything you can think of. If you constantly try and re-invent what’s already been invented you will never get to experience the fullness of life.

Never before in history has there been so much opportunity to create or experience whatsoever you want from life. You can quite literally access information on anything in a matter of minutes. Go on. Experience it all. Stop trying to explain and dig into the ‘why’s’ of everything. More knowledge will not improve your life. Only action will. It is the experience of life and not the knowledge of it’s mechanics that will bring you true fulfillment. Just do it. Do it all. Experience it all. The wonders of this world’ are not reserved to a select few. It’s there for the taking and you can be do and have whatsoever you may want. You simply need to use that which is already known.

Doing The Best You Can?

.

“No. Try not. Do… or do not.

There is no try.“

-YODA (from Star Wars)

I’ve always been a big Star Wars fan. Underneath all the special effects and the eternal battle between good and evil, there lies an immensely powerful message. It is a message of hope and more specifically a hope in the human mind and the human will. A lot of my early childhood beliefs where definitely influenced by Yoda (one of the Jedi masters)

How many times do you hear people say things like ‘I’ll give it my best shot’ or ‘I’ll give it a go.’ Whenever I hear that I get slightly discouraged for I know that it will only happen when things are convenient. See, there is a big difference between doing the best you can and doing whatever it takes. When you do the best you can you will only do it as long as it’s convenient and within your reach. When you do whatever it takes, you burn all your bridges and you know that there is just no other way. You MUST succeed.

Only with an absolute commitment will you find within yourself that which is necessary for success. Achieving or acquiring anything which you haven’t already got at the moment will require of you to do things that you’ve never done before. It’s inevitable that this will be ‘uncomfortable’ and that you will face challenges. The problem is that most people quit at this point which is exactly where they should be stepping up a notch.

Inherent in trying is a level of failure and hesitation. Trying implies that something can either work or not. It’s like being on the fence where it can go either way. When you commit though, you cut off all the possibilities other than the one that you are absolutely committed to. The possibility of failure no longer exists and you don’t even think about it. This is incredibly empowering for it compels you to think of and only look for solutions and answers instead of wallowing in the apparent problems and temporary road blocks.

Napoleon Hill, In his book Think And Grow Rich tells the story of the general who went to battle with an army twice the size of his own. Upon arriving on the shores the general gave the orders for all the ships to be burned. He then told his men that they either win the battle or they perish for there is no escape route. Needless to say, they won.

Having the desire to achieve something and committing to do whatever it takes guarantees success. When you commit you trigger a force within you that will empower you to find within yourself all the resources you need to achieve it. Inherent in your desires are the seeds and the mechanics for it’s attainment. Commitment is one of the most valuable resources you have. When you are only interested in achieving or obtaining a goal it will rarely happen. You must commit. It will create within you a sense of certainty that no matter what happens, you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you will achieve what you are committed to. Not only will this empower you to take action, but it will liberate you from doubt and the fears of failure that most often keep you from even attempting something in the first place.

If you are going to go for it why not go all the way? Why not make the commitment? The most effective way to make a commitment is to do something that can not be undone. You want to throw yourself off the cliff and learn to fly on the way down. There’s no guarantee that you will learn to fly on your way down, but you will definitely be much more compelled to find a way. It’s when your ‘want to’ becomes ‘have to’ that you really gain access to all of you. This is when magic happens. This is when you discover who you really are and what you’re really capable off.
