What You Cannot Count Also Counts…Or Not?

“Not everything that can be counted counts and not

everything that counts can be counted.”

- ALBERT EINSTEIN

We live in a culture where the lure of quick fix solutions are around every corner. We all have a level of impatience and when we want something we want it NOW - who wants to wait to get what they want? These quick fix solutions often only deal with symptoms but never with causes and it is the cause that creates the effect (or symptom) which can become a very disempowering downward spiral.

Einstein was arguably the greatest scientific mind of our time and he obviously realized the important guiding principle that not everything you do has to produce an (immediate) result. It still counts even if you cannot see it yet. Every action is a cause set in motion and for every cause there is an effect - for every action there is a reaction. This is one of the most fundamental laws of this universe we live in. All of your actions carry with them consequences and your concern should be with taking determined action and not with constantly measuring the results. It is our ‘nature’ to expect a return on our actions and if we don’t we tend to become discouraged to take further action out of the fear of not getting something back.

Sometimes even the smallest action can create a knock on effect that changes your whole life. Never succumb to the delusion that because you can see the results of your actions that it did not produce a result. Not everything that counts can be ’seen’ and ‘measured’. Remember that you don’t always have to get something back - life’s not something to bargain with. Life offers you the opportunity of becoming something more by giving something back. No person can become a success without giving something back to life.

Success is not an overnight event. It often requires a lot of work and investing a lot of your time without seeing immediate results. Any successful entrepreneur that ever create a business out of nothing will vouch for this. You have to pay the price and if you expect to count everything that comes back to you, you will probably not reach the level of success that you aspire to. Thomas Edison labored day and night and worked through more than 1000 ‘failed’ experiments before he finally discovered the electric light bulb. Not all his experiments counted for something measurable, yet they did for they helped to create his eventual success.

If you work just to see the instant result; the one that you can count, then you probably won’t experience the long term result that you really desire. Success at anything is either obtainable or sustainable and short term success will never give you that sense of fulfillment that only comes from the sustained experience of success.

How To ‘Help’ Yourself.

Having a strong reason or purpose for doing something forms the backbone of all your actions. Rarely will you do something if you don’t have a reason for doing it - you always need a ‘why’ even if it is at a very unconscious level. This is the true meaning of motivation - it is a strong reason or motive for doing something. With a strong enough reason you can get yourself to do anything.

The interesting aspect about human beings is that we can only motivate ourselves to a limited extent with our own self interests. Usually, we will do more for other (especially our loved ones) than we would ever do for ourselves. The reason for this is that once you step outside your own desires and find a reason BIGGER than yourself, that is when it all changes and you will find yourself compelled to step up and take the actions that previously seemed too hard or even impossible.

Whenever you give something, you immediately have the experience without having to wait for anything or anyone outside yourself. Doing something for someone else is the quickest way to initiate action and in doing it you actually help yourself because all of your actions carry with them consequences and sowing acts of kindness will guarantee great rewards.

The easiest way to achieve anything is to help someone else achieve it. Not only will you find it to be easier, but it is much more fulfilling. The only things in life you get to keep are the things you give away and in the process you will immediately have the experience of it. When you give something with a sincere heart you create a vacuum that attracts back more of what you just gave away. Through our actions we ‘train’ our nervous systems into doing. Whether you do something for yourself or whether you do it for another it is all the same.

When you ‘do’ something you admit to your unconscious mind that you actually CAN do it and also that it is important to you. This process will set in motion events and circumstances that will rush to your assistance and help you in ways beyond what you can consciously train yourself to do. Your unconscious mind acts on your beliefs and your inner knowing. When ‘admit’ to your unconscious mind that you have enough to give away it will act on that belief which means that there is enough and that is what it will act on which is abundance.

When you consider that the only reason why you want any material object is only to have an emotional experience in the first place. The truth is that we all have an unlimited supply of any emotion we wish to experience and the easiest way to experience any of these emotions is to simply give it to another. Whether it be love, joy, kindness, compassion or excitement you can simply go and give it to another. The best part about giving is that you can’t sincerely give anything without feeling good about it. It is in our nature to want to feel good and if giving makes us feel good, then it is in our nature to give away and share what we have and what we are.

Remember that receiving is evidence of giving. People who enjoy an abundance of anything, whether it be love, money or joy are those people who give it away freely. Think on this fact and you will come to understand the true power of giving. When you sincerely give it will reflect in your attitude and your actions and filter through to every aspect of your life. In caring for, helping and sharing life with others we get to experience one of life’s true joys and one of our primal needs which it to contribute beyond ourselves. Whatever you want in life go and give it and it will come back to you in avalanches of abundance!
