An Introduction to Self Mastery

It is a question whether the great majority of people do not ruin their lives and mar their happiness by lack of self-control. How few people we meet in life who are well balanced, who have that exquisite poise which is characteristic of the finished character!

Yes, humanity surges with uncontrolled passion, is tumultuous with ungoverned grief, is blown about by anxiety and doubt only the wise man, only he whose thoughts are controlled and purified, makes the winds and the storms of the soul obey him.

Tempest-tossed souls, wherever ye may be, under whatsoever conditions ye may live, know this in the ocean of life the isles of Blessedness are smiling, and the sunny shore of your ideal awaits your coming. Keep your hand firmly upon the helm of thought.

In the bark of your soul reclines the commanding Master;

He does but sleep: wake Him.

Self-control is strength;

Right Thought is mastery;

Calmness is power.

Say unto your heart,

“Peace, be still!”

Time Is Running Out

How do you value your time? Do you even value it? I’m not talking about putting a dollar amount on it, but rather on the emotional value. Of all ‘things’ in life time is probably the most fragile of all, because we all have such a limited amount of it. On top of that we never even know how much more we’ve got. Although this might sound a bit depressing it’s actually not. I think that if anything, it encourages us to make the most of NOW which is the only time we’ve really got.

An awareness of how precious our time really is can make a huge difference. The challenge however, is that we tend to get caught up in daily routines and we end up go about our lives in such a way that everything feels like a blur. Time just seem to rush by.

Monitoring your every minute and analyzing whether you are making the most of it will just drive you absolutely insane. I believe that the key is, firstly in doing what you love and if you really can’t then you should at least love what you do. But then the important thing is to make sure you capture that which is great in your day. As you look back at your life you certainly can’t remember all of it although all of it is stored somewhere in your mind. What you do remember however are moments. Good or bad, happy or sad, depressing or joyous - all these moments of your live have immense emotional power.

If there is one thing that can greatly enhance your life then I would suggest you practice what I call memory management. You have the power to selectively remember and indulge in the memory of whatever you choose and as you do you can start to radically change the way you feel.

Even more powerful is the ability to capture the great moments of your day. No matter how ‘bad’ your day may seem there’s always something worth remembering. A smile, a halo, a compliment - there is always something worth remembering. I capture these moments in my journal, something that I hope you are getting into the habit of doing. The magical thing about this is that as you get into the habit of capturing these special moments you start looking for them and even creating them and in doing so you make your days memorable - you make them worth remembering and you invest your time in life itself.

It’s a great idea to start your day with the right frame of mind. Here’s a poem that is just wonderful for putting you in that frame of mind. You can read it every day or even better - memorize it and carry it in your heart. Make your life great by making your experience of life great. Give. Give of yourself. You are a gift by just being you. Share it with everybody you come in contact with.

“This is the beginning of a new day,

God has given me this day to use as I will.

I can waste it or use it for good.

What I do today is very important

Because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.

When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever.

Leaving something in it’s place I have traded for it.

I want it to be gain, not a loss - good not evil.

Success, not failure,

In order that I shall not forget

The price I paid for it.”
