What Do You Really (Really) Want?
What is it that you really want? I mean, what is it that you really, really want from and for your life? Off course you have all the ‘mundane’ day-to-day stuff that you want, but what I a talking about is on a much deeper and much more fulfilling level.
We all have ‘wish lists’ and for most it includes financial freedom, perfect health, a great body, loving and passionate relationships and maybe high regard by our peers. The difference is that for most people these are dreams that are way out there – it remains something that they believe are reserved for ‘other’ more fortunate people or that it is something that they will get to ‘some day’ when x, y and z happens.
When I am asking the question ‘what do you really want?’ I am asking you what you really want your life to be about? What will you spend your time pursuing? How will you invest your time and what will you become? How do you want to live your life? What do you want to experience during this limited time that you have as a human being?
Remember what Dr. Maltz (founder of Psycho Cybernetics) said: we are all consistently pursuing something. We are by nature ‘goal seeking creatures’ and what we define as important is what we will attract into our lives because we act on what we think about…which causes us to become what we think about.
Having something ‘grand’ to aspire to and having goals is incredibly important. I would venture to say that depression is purely the result of not having anything to look forward to in life. When your life becomes stale and unimaginative you loose your lust for life. Goals and dreams, more than anything, else is what drives us forward in life. Having something that really excites you, and something that you are moving towards, gives your life a sense of purpose. Our lives are NEVER static. We are consistently and continuously ‘becoming’ and with or without a ‘goal’ we will still become.
The question then remains. What do you really want? A LOT of people really struggle with this (judging by the sheer amount of emails I received). I think the reason is primarily because of how we are conditioned and the way that the modern western civilization is structured. We lead to believe that we are a certain way and we are conditioned to ‘like’ and dislike certain things based on popular culture. We make very little decisions on our own. From a very early age most of us are taught (on a subconscious level) what we should and shouldn’t want. When it comes to finding what you really want, then it’s simply a case of becoming aware of who you really are and what satisfies you on the deepest level – what is it that really gives you joy?
Believe it or not, but the biggest reason why most people never discover what they really want from life is because they never take the time and the effort to do this. You MUST take ‘me-time’ on a regular basis to be in touch with yourself. This is not about silly ‘spiritual hoo-ha’. It’s about developing a sense of clarity to enjoy more peace, greater success and true fulfillment in your life.
A good way to start this process would be to start off by thinking about what you DO NOT want for your life. Although it’s not a very positive way to do it, I have found that most people find it much easier to come up with what they do not want. So, what is it that you do not want your life to be about? This can make all the difference!
To illustrate the significance of this I will share a little story with you. I’ll give you the short version…
“In the 1850’s two young brothers with a passion for inventing new things made a chance discovery that would earn them a fortune. They discovered and developed an explosive that is now known as dynamite. At first their discovery proved to be very useful as it provided a way to conduct controlled explosions that could help with mining and building essential railways. Unfortunately, dynamite became increasingly popular as a mechanism for cannons and guns and soon enough the two brothers became very wealthy through the sale of their explosives to arms manufacturers world wide. The brothers lead quite a secluded life and when one of them died suddenly there was a lot of speculation about what actually happened. Without having all the correct details the newspaper published the obituary of the brother that died only to find out the next day that they published the obituary of the wrong brother. So, the brother that was alive got to read his own obituary. This little mistake proved to be one of the most significant mistakes of our century as this man reading his own obituary was none other than Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. To this day the Nobel Prize is awarded to the highest achievements and contributions to society in the fields of science, literature and medicine.â€
When Alfred Nobel read his own obituary he realized what he did not want his life to be about. He then made a decision which was to transform what his life was about. He decided to make his life one that stands for contribution and excellence instead of death and destruction.
Maybe your life is heading in a direction that is not in alignment with what you ultimately want it to be about. Start thinking about this…start thinking about what it is that you want and also about what you do not want and next week we will look at some powerful ways to develop a vision for your life and determining what you really, really want for your life.
In the mean time you might want to start thinking about how you would change your life around.  Some people waste years, decades, even their entire lives waiting for that extraordinary lightning bolt that will change everything for them. If you know you want something in your life to change, then all you need is just such a moment. The good news is you don’t have to wait for it to show up. In The Day That Turns Your Life Around, Jim Rohn will guide you in turning your life around. Make sure you look at the audio downloads that are available. (P.S the ‘Goal Setting Workshop’ is particularly insightful). Read More…
